Rick Santorum: The Angry Conservative

I consider myself a conservative person and voter, but I do have an independent streak in me that leans both towards the Middle or towards a Libertarian viewpoint depending on the issue.  My core is conservative and Rick Santorum is very conservative in some of his views, and there are many stances he has that I like and I do admire how he has lived his life.   He has walked the walk.

As much as a positive as that is for him, it is a negative as well because his passion comes across many times as anger. Anger towards the Left, the President, and to his rival Republican Candidates.  When he gets on the stump, much like his speech Super Tuesday evening, his lips get tight, his voice becomes very stern and his positions and thoughts come out angry.  It doesn’t match his personal life and the way he has raised his family as a solid Christian man.  It is one thing to be convicted in one’s beliefs, but that has to come out as passion not as a forceful blow to those who are listening.

It started with the debates where he began to emerge as a solid candidate.  Unfortunately, at the same time, I think he began to emerge as the candidate with a chip on his shoulder who seem to be lashing out in a very controlled manner. I believe that is what has begun to alienate the Independents in this country.  If the Independent voter is the rational voter that everyone claims that he or she is, then the contraception upheaval would not be a big deal for them because they would be able to see through it.  However, when the candidate comes across on these subjects like Frederic March in Inherit The Wind, the normal rational people will begin to be turned off by the presentation of the position.

I feel that is where Rick Santorum is right now.  If he is the Conservative then why is Mitt Romney getting a good share of the Conservative vote?  I will grant Santorum that he gets the votes from those who are “very conservative” but in many of the other categories, he is getting crushed.

Governor Romney may be learning how to be a General Election candidate on the fly and me seem plain at times, but he is consistent in his presentation and in his demeanor.

Perception is reality and I think many voters are beginning to wonder if Rick Santorum would be an angry President.

I don’t know if that is the case but if you watch him on the stump and in the debates and on his TV interviews, he has a very difficult time concealing his angst.
